Summer Heatwave Survival Guide for Renters

Summer has officially arrived in Northwest Arkansas, and with temperatures soaring across the country, staying safe during extreme heat is more important than ever. While we all look forward to longer days, pool parties, and backyard barbecues, high temperatures can also bring serious risks for people, pets, and even your rental home.

Here are a few simple ways to stay cool, protect your furry family members, and keep your home in great shape all summer long.

Protect Yourself from the Summer Heat

Extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke. Whether you're spending the day outdoors or simply running errands, these tips can help you stay safe:

  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Limit outdoor activities during peak heat. The hottest hours are typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Wear lightweight clothing. Light-colored, breathable fabrics can help keep your body temperature down.
  • Know the signs of heat-related illness. Dizziness, headaches, nausea, excessive sweating, and confusion can all be warning signs that it's time to cool off and seek help.

Keep Your Pets Safe

Our pets feel the heat just as much as we do, and sometimes even more.

  • Never leave pets in a parked vehicle. Temperatures inside a car can become dangerous within minutes.
  • Provide plenty of fresh water and shade.
  • Walk your dogs early or late in the day. Sidewalks and asphalt can become hot enough to burn paws.
  • Watch for signs of overheating, including excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, or vomiting.

A good rule of thumb: if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws.

Protect Your Rental Home During the Heat

High temperatures can also put extra stress on your home. Taking a few precautions can help keep your property comfortable and prevent unnecessary maintenance issues.

  1. Help Your Air Conditioner Work Efficiently
  2. Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day.
  3. Avoid setting your thermostat extremely low, as this can overwork your HVAC system.
  4. Change air filters regularly if your lease requires tenant maintenance.
  5. Prevent Plumbing Problems
  6. During vacations, don't completely shut off your air conditioning. Keeping your home at a reasonable temperature helps prevent excessive humidity and moisture buildup.
  7. Reduce Energy Costs
  8. Use ceiling fans to circulate cool air.
  9. Avoid using heat-producing appliances like ovens during the hottest parts of the day.
  10. Unplug electronics when not in use to reduce excess heat and save energy.
  11. Report Maintenance Issues Early
  12. If you notice your air conditioner isn't cooling properly, water is leaking, or anything seems out of the ordinary, report it to your property manager as soon as possible. Addressing small problems early can help prevent larger repairs down the road.
